In 1962 Hubli & Dharwad cities were combined together and was recognized as twin cities i.e. Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation. Mr.G.R.Nalwadi of Dharwad was nominated by Government as the first Mayor of HDMC. In 1968 Dr.V.V.Teggimani was first elected mayor of HDMC.

Hubli-Dharwad have now become one of the Commercial, Industrial and educational centre. It has present population of about 12 lakhs and covers an area of 202.28 Sq.Kms out of which constructed area is approximately 72.78 Sq.kms including 45 villages and large number of extensions spread in all the directions.

Notified industrial areas in the twin cities are Gokul Industrial Estate,Tarihal,Rayapur,Sattur,Belur.In small scale sector, the main products of manufacture are agro products, engineering products, machine tools, chemical & pharmaceutical products. Industrial valves manufactured in Hubli, meet the nations major share of requirement. Railway Board to initiate measures to shift the railway recruitment Board (RRB) to Hubli from Bangalore to give preference to kannadigas in railway recruitment. Introduction of this unit will create 2000 to 3000 employment opportunities.

The preferred places in Dharwad & Hubli for a walk are Nrupatunga Betta, Railway Ground, NehruGround, Glass house, Kumarvyas Nagar, Gokul Road near Aerodrome, KMS Compound, Gadag Road, Kusugal Road, Karnataka University, Karnataka College.

In order to reduce the intensity of traffic inside the city, the city by-pass National Highway No 4 is built, which is diverted from Hubli at Gabbur and Dharwad near Belur.

Kittur Rani Channamma Circle:

Kittur Rani Channamma Circle is located in Traffic Island of Hubli where 8 roads meet.
The newly renovated and remodeled famous Kittur Chennamma Circle is in the heart of Hubli City . Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation has invested total amount of Rs 70 lakhs for the renovation.
The iron grills around the statue of Kittur Rani Chennamma has been removed and lawn is created around the statue. Besides, 300 mtrs road around the circle is asphalted.

Unkal Lake:

Unkal lake is beautiful water spot in Hubli & is about 110 years old. Unkal is known to be Karma Bhoomi of Shri Siddappajja, who was born in the year 1859 and left home when he was 14 years old in search of Guru. He resided in Unkal Mailarlinga Temple and died on 31-01-1921. Since then Jatra (mela) is held every year. Unkal Lake which is the major source of drinking water for Hubli.

Watching the sun set and rise from the lake is an enthralling experience. In the evenings, the lake is virtually a fair ground with various kinds of entertainment and food stalls lining the lake. Centre of the lake is situated the statue of Swami Vivekananda which is the prime attraction of the lake. It has recreational facilities for children. You can enjoy a boat ride here. The Unkal lake , however, is large enough to accommodate all visitors as well as the hawkers. Hotel Naveen,the star attraction in Hubli is just beside this spot.

Glass House:

The flower show at Glass House is a sight to behold. It is a venue for conducting many exhibitions. This is very much similar to the one present in Lalbagh, Bangalore. It has expansive lush lawns, skating ground. The glorious Glass House has the pride of being the venue for honoring various dignitaries who have visited the state.Laughing Club was inaugurated in ‘Glass House garden’ on 22-04-2000. Thousand of people participating in laughing exercise, half an hour in the morning enjoy good health and sound mind at free of cost.

Siddharoodha Math

Shri Siddaroodha Swamy who born in 1836, visited Hubli in 1877 & visited Samadhi Mandir of Shri Chidgananand Swamy in 1882 and subsequently resided here. Ch idgananand Swamy Samadhi was built during the period between 1897 & 1907. Siddaroodha Swamy went to Samadhi in 1929. In 1919 Lokamanya Tilak visited Siddaroodh Math and later in 1924 Gandhiji visited.

Moorusaviramath

It was built during 12th century which consists of Samadhi of Shri Gurusiddeshwar Swamy. In 12th century, during the period of Kalyan Revolutionistic period, Sri Channabasavanna stepped over this place accompanied by 3,000 (Three Thousand i.e. Mooru Savir in Kannada language) saints and went to Ulavi leaving the saints, to spread the universal Gospel. Thus the name originated as "Moorusavir" Math.

The Multi-storied Hubli IT park, spread over an area of 2,77,000 sqft, has been operational from May 2001. It is located in the IT Park - situated in the heart of the City. STPI Hubli is sub center of STPI Bangalore. STPI Hubli has a high speed gateway with a capacity of 1 Mbps, capable of servicing the internet community in the radius of 40 kms. With its high-tech microwave setup, the capacity can go upto Davanagere, Shimoga and upto Gulbarga and Belgaum in the Northern region using hired fiber / copper. STPI Hubli is a fourth independent gateway in Karnataka having its main center at Bangalore, which accounts for one third of country's software exports from Karnataka.

ISKCON’s Sri Krishna Balarama Temple is formally dedicated to the people of Hubli-Dharwad in-particular and people of north Karnataka in general. Temple being constructed at Rayapur by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) based on the model of its temple in Bangalore. ISKCON is providing midday meals to 80,000 children in the twin cities. Newly constructed ISKCON temple at Rayapur is open to devotees from February 12.2006.

Established in the year 1991, has well built temple of Shri Saibaba of Shirdi and has scenic beauty.Rama-Navami & Vijaya-dashami are celebrated here. The Shirdi Saibaba Temple, located at Shirdi Nagar attracts millions of devotees of all religions, castes and creed who come to pay homage to Shri Sai Baba. The temple is a beautiful shrine. Every Thursday annaprasadam is arranged. Many remarkable celebrations such as Laksha Deepotsav, Aradhana Utsav, etc. will be arranged.

Dharwad Fort

Dharwad Fort was constructed in 1403 AD. It covers 76 acres with an outside diameter of about 800 yards and has two gates where the two wives of Bapu Gokhale committed "Sati" . The Fort also has a Maruti temple. Now the Fort is ruined and is considered as one of the important monuments of Dharwad.

Karnataka College is constructed in 1889 by the old MSS Railway and administrative building was constructed in 1953. It offers degree courses in Arts, Commerce and Science and is one of the prestigious and oldest colleges in Karnataka State.

Basel Mission Church

The Basel Mission Church which is situated on Station Road, Dharwad, was built in the year 1844 by Basel Missionary Society. It is about 76 feet long, 42 feet broad and 24 feet high.

Shivaratri is celebrated in the month of February /March by keeping awake whole night as an offering to the God Shiva.

On last day the Ganesh Idols are taken out on the procession and dissolved in water bodies.
